Fire is a major problem in the United States. It is the second most frequent cause of accidental death in the home. Eighty percent of annual fire deaths occur in residential housing unit, generally the victim's own home. The National Fire Protection Association reports that in 1998 there were approximately 283,000 fires in one and two family dwellings. These fires resulted in 2,775 fatalities and over $3.6 billion in property loss.
Most of these fatalities could be easily prevented with a few simple precautions. Working smoke detectors, a well-rehearsed escape plan, and a safety survey to limit hazardous conditions in your home can mean the difference between life and death.
Home Safety Survey Programs are a primary method of fire prevention. These programs have proven to be successful in reducing the loss of life, injury, and property damage from fire. The Village of Gurnee Fire Department offers free home surveys. These surveys are conducted by a Fire Prevention Bureau staff member. Fire Department representatives will assist you in looking for hazardous conditions throughout your home and provide you with recommendations on how to remedy these conditions.
During the Home Safety Survey, Fire Department staff provides assistance with:
Proper extension cord usage
Proper smoke detector placement and operation
Proper storage of flammables
Planning and rehearsing your escape plan
To schedule a safety survey, or if you have any further questions, please call the City of King Fire Department at (336) 983-3030 and ask for the on-duty Company Officer.
